Seizure of Charitable Foundations (Waqfs)02 September 2018

Since the coup between 1967-74, it has become impossible to elect the board for the administration of the waqfs because of the violation of the rights.

Even if a new legislation in 2008 was put in effect, the minority still does not have the full power in the administration. According to the statistics, while earlier in the 1920s the minority owned 84% of the land, now they own only 25% of it. But, there is a hidden truth in the background. This statistic also shows that the Greek origin citizens are encouraged in purchasing immovable properties. It is also denied that they are Ottoman possessions and it is claimed that they are the lands of Greeks who came from the Soviet Union.

Recently, the provisions of the law passed in 2007 (No: 3554) erased the existing depts of Waqfs, however, the fines and income taxes imposed on the waqf properties remained intact. The law regarding administration and management of the Waqfs (Law no: 3647/2008) was prepared without taking into consideration the opinions and proposals of the minority.
