Western Thrace Turks commemorate July 1516 July 2021Turkey's Consulate General in Komotini held a memorial event in the consulate garden today on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

Events were held in Western Thrace on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the 15 July Democracy and National Unity Day of the Turkish nation, which won a great victory against the coup attempt on 15 July 2016 by the members of the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization, who wanted to infiltrate the Turkish Armed Forces and divide the homeland of Turkey.

Due to the pandemic, a limited number of guests attended the event held in the consulate garden this morning.

After the Consul General Murat Ömeroğlu, Consul Neslihan Altan and Deputy Consul İbrahim Işık greeted the guests at the entrance gate of the consulate, the commemoration event started.

The event started with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs of July 15, followed by the National Anthem.

Then, first the elected Mufti of İskeçe (Xanthi) Ahmet Mete and then the Consul General of Komotini Murat Ömeroğlu gave a speech stating the meaning and importance of the day.

The 15 July Democracy and National Unity Day event ended with the prayer of İbrahim Şerif, Chairman of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority Advisory Board and Mufti of Komotini.
